Virginia’s Renewable Energy

The continued growth of the world’s population, coupled with economic and technological growth and new, modern lifestyles, has led to an increase in energy demand and consumption. Fossil fuels have been the main source of energy for many years, but their use has many negative effects on the environment. This has made it necessary to transition to renewable energy sources to tackle climate change and meet the 1.5°C target. This article presents an overview of the different types of renewable energy sources, their potential and limitations, and their relationship to climate change, economic growth and human health. It also examines consumers’ willingness to pay for renewable energy sources in different countries, based on existing literature. Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) regarding the current use of renewable energy sources, the evolution of their use and forecasts of their future use are analyzed. Lastly, policies and strategies are recommended to address climate change and fully integrate renewable energy sources as a sustainable energy source.

Energy is vital to satisfy basic human needs. It is essential for human health, daily life, communication and mobility and, in general, for economic and social development and well-being [1]. Global energy needs have grown rapidly in recent years and are expected to increase further with population growth and economic and technological growth. The world population is expected to increase to approximately 9 billion people by 2050 [2]. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), global energy consumption is expected to increase approximately 50% between 2018 and 2050.

From the Industrial Revolution to the present day, fossil fuels have been the main source of energy and their use has increased to around 10,000 million tons of oil equivalent. In 2010, fossil fuels provided about 80% of the world’s primary energy [4] and are expected to be used in the future to meet the same large amount of global energy needs [3]. More specifically, fossil fuels are expected to represent 78% of global energy consumption by 2040 [5].

The negative impact of fossil fuels on the environment has long been known. Their burning and use leads to the release of large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which is a direct cause of global warming and climate change [6]. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 65% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are carbon dioxide (CO) emissions.

The United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992 laid the foundation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stating that reductions are necessary to avoid catastrophic consequences for the environment [6]. Furthermore, the United Nations proposed 17 sustainable development goals in 2015, covering, among others, the themes of clean energy, climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to implement policies and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse [8].

Key mitigation measures include reducing the use of fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources [9], as energy is considered a key factor in sustainable development [10]. Furthermore, the limited and high costs of fossil fuel sources make the transition to renewable energy sources more important to ensure energy security and meet energy demand [11]. Renewable energy represented an average share of 17.5% of total final energy consumption worldwide between 1990 and 2015 and is expected to be the fastest growing form of energy in the future [3].

This article examines the potential and limitations of renewable energy sources and the advantages and disadvantages of their use in relation to the environment, climate change and economic growth. It also shows consumers’ willingness to pay (DAP) for renewable energy sources in different countries, as calculated by other studies in recent literature. Finally, it analyzes the evolution of its use in the past and expectations for its use in the future.

Renewable energy sources (RES) or alternative energy sources are all renewable energy sources that produce energy continuously and are inexhaustible [12]. Renewable energy sources include solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower and ocean energy [1] and can be used for electricity generation, transportation, household use, district heating, etc. [12].

Renewable energy sources have a large number of potentials and advantages. They can improve the quality of the environment because they produce little or no greenhouse gas emissions. They also have low operating costs and economic benefits and, at a macroeconomic level, they promote employment and stabilize energy prices. It can improve living conditions at home and cover most energy needs without exhaustion [13]. Furthermore, they can have a positive effect on human health, as studies have shown that, due to their low greenhouse gas emissions, they do not cause health problems compared to fossil fuels [14].

The main disadvantages of renewable energy sources include their high initial cost, which can be prohibitive and prohibitive for consumers, and the cost of storage systems, which is also very high. Renewable energy also depends on weather conditions, and unpredictable weather conditions over long periods of time can lead to energy shortages [1]. Furthermore, large areas are required to install the necessary renewable energy technology. According to Brock and Bradshaw [15], renewable energy sources can provide about 50% of the total energy needed in the United States, but more than 17% of the land must be used [5].

Despite small obstacles, renewable energy sources are the best option to meet global energy demand, replace excessive consumption of fossil fuels and achieve the seventh Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of affordable and accessible energy. clean energy [1].

Solar energy refers to energy that comes from sunlight or heat[16]. They are produced in photovoltaic (PV) or concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. Photovoltaic panels are panels that can quickly convert sunlight into electricity and can be used for personal use on a larger scale, and are one of the most important modern renewable energy technologies. They are expected to play a very important role in generating electricity and energy in the future. Concentrated solar power plants use mirrors to collect sunlight, which heats fluids and the resulting steam drives turbines to generate electricity [17]. The sun can produce energy indefinitely, which means that solar energy can eliminate the use of fossil fuels and meet all energy demands [18]. More specifically, the sun can provide “7,500 times the world’s annual primary energy consumption of 450 exajoules,” according to the World Energy Council [19]. Furthermore, solar energy does not pollute or harm the environment and human health, and can ensure energy security because solar energy is available all over the planet [16].
