The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) classifies veterans’ disabilities by organ system. Essentially, service-related injuries and illnesses are classified based on the organ system most affected or impaired.
The Human Body
An organ system is a group of organs (such as heart, lungs, eyes, kidneys, etc.) that together perform a specific function. The human body consists of 11 organ systems that control all body functions. These are:
VA identifies 15 organ systems of the human body to determine disability and compensation. The VA Schedule for Assessment of Disabilities (VASRD) uses physical systems as part of the assessment process.
Although these 15 systems overlap with the 11 body systems listed above, the VA is divided into different human organ systems. For example, the VA includes other categories, such as mental disorders.
Each “body system” category has a list of conditions – divided into subcategories – that are associated with that specific organic system of the human body. The cardiovascular system, sometimes called the circulatory system, consists of the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. Basically, the heart pumps blood to vessels and capillaries that reach every cell in the body. The cardiovascular system plays an important role in maintaining internal homeostasis.
Many heart diseases and injuries are associated with its soldiers. Common cardiovascular conditions in veterans are hypertension (high blood pressure), coronary heart disease, and coronary heart disease.

VA combines the hemic and lymphatic systems into one. The lymphatic system regulates fluid levels in the body, controls blood flow through tissues, and helps support immune responses in lymphatic vessels, as the heme system is the first to help produce blood.
Hemic and lymphatic disorders are rare in military personnel. Several types of lymphoma — a cancer that starts in white blood cells — have been linked to soldiers exposed to toxins or herbicides during military service. Other diseases include anemia, Hodgkin’s disease, lymph node tuberculosis, etc.
The integumentary system acts as a physical barrier to protect the body’s internal environment from the external environment. These are mainly hair, skin and nails. It is also responsible for regulating body temperature and the synthesis of vitamin D.

There are many neurological illnesses and unexpected illnesses that soldiers can develop as a result of military service. These include spinal muscular atrophy, traumatic brain injury (TBI), epilepsy and seizure disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and multiple sclerosis (MS).
Common eye conditions in veterans include scotomas, blurred vision, retinal detachment, intraocular hemorrhage, retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma.

This VA category includes diseases such as cholera, malaria, rheumatic fever, Lyme disease, tuberculosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and lupus.
The VA can reimburse veterans for a variety of dental and oral conditions, including diseased or missing teeth, temporomandibular disease (TMD), cleft palate, cleft palate, jaw and neoplasia.
Sometimes the VA may misclassify your disability and give you a lower rate than you thought. The VA may also terminate your service connection completely if it decides that you do not have sufficient evidence to support your claim for benefits.
