I decided to write from time to time about the thoughts that God shows me in my personal Bible study. Psalm 46:2 has really been on my mind this week. “God is our hope and strength, help in trouble.” I think we as Christians have a good intellectual understanding, but we struggle to really grasp it in our heart and soul.
We know that God is with us and gives us strength, and we know that we can turn to Him in times of trouble. However, I’m not sure we really believe he needs to help us. I mean we know that everything will work out in the end when Christ returns, but do we believe that he is a present helper? Not just a gift, but many gifts that will help. If we really believed that, I think we would be less anxious and stressed. What prevents us from experiencing the present help of God?
I believe it may have something to do with our ability to commit to it. We want to be in control and know what will happen next. If we know, we can prepare for the worst or relax knowing it will work out. it’s true But God doesn’t help us like that… He doesn’t tell us what to expect and what will happen. So maybe we don’t feel God’s present help because we don’t submit to His help.

“This God, his way is perfect. The word of the Lord is true. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. Psalm 18:30
This verse shows that God wants us to take refuge in Him. We go to him. He wants you to “come near” with confidence, as Hebrews 4:16 tells us. “Therefore let us draw near to the throne of grace with confidence, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our tribulation.” So maybe God’s help doesn’t always get us out of our misery, but
God is not for my comfort or my easy happy life. God is for God and for His glory. He is glorified because he creates, loves, saves, is merciful, gives mercy, is patient, redeems and restores. God is doing great things and He wants us to join Him. It works to change and shape us in good times and bad. He wants us to be involved in ministering to the broken and saving the lost. We are not promised an easy happy life without hardships. But we are promised God’s present help in trouble. You may not feel it, but it is there. The scriptures are very clear about this. It doesn’t say that you will feel any different because God is a present helper, or that God will take away your problems…it just says that He is a present helper in times of trouble.
Therefore draw near (Heb. 4:16). Behold the beauty of God (Psalm 40:2, 2 Corinthians 3:18). Remind yourself of His truth (2 Peter 1). Think about how much He loves you (Psalm 139, Ephesians 1). Worship God, know that He is near, tell Him everything, obey Him, and He will give you peace (Philippians 4:4-7).
