Renewable energy has increased dramatically over the past few years. This is due to the reduction of fossil fuels and increased energy demand due to the growth of the world’s population. This article tries to give an idea of what researchers are doing in the field of remote sensing and geographic information mapping (GIS) for the study of renewable energy resources to achieve a sustainable future. Many studies related to renewable resources viz. geothermal energy, wind energy, hydropower, biomass, and solar energy, are reviewed in this article. The focus of this review paper is to explore how remote sensing and GIS can be useful in determining the best locations for renewable resources. There are many studies from different parts of the world that use similar methods to investigate the locations of renewable resources of different types in this document. Although each method and GIS used for the study of renewable energy sources seems to sell itself better than the others, it is important to remember that in fact, the combination of different methods is better for work. Throughout the paper, several issues related to the use of remote sensing and GIS for renewable energy are analyzed from current and future perspectives and solutions are proposed. The authors believe that the conclusions and recommendations obtained from the case studies and literature reviewed in this study will be valuable for renewable energy scientists and policy makers.
